Urn PlanterThere are dozens of garden pots available today and it can seem almost impossible to pick the perfect container for your plants. We hope to provide you with some tips to choose the right garden pots for your situation.

There are many ways to displays plants around the garden – in various containers, tubs, window boxes, planters and hanging baskets made of different materials:

Terra Cotta/Clay Stone/Concrete Fiberglass/Resin
Wood Metal Plastic

Style

Trends and fashions can often decide the type of garden pots to use but you should try to match the style of container to your own décor or architecture. The stunning contemporary style planter may look out of place on the veranda of an old style cottage. If your garden has an oriental theme then a plastic garden pot may not be the best choice.

Colour

Do not have too many different types or colors as these may not blend together well. A collection of matching garden pots looks great or try different shapes and sizes, all made of the same material. When deciding on colors you will find that light colored containers will reflect the heat and reduce water loss.

Size

The size or the number of plants you wish to plant together and available space will determine the size of the garden pot. However bigger is usually better to allow growth and room for the roots of the plants to move downwards. Larger ones don’t require watering so frequently whereas smaller garden pots will dry out more quickly. Also think about how big the mature plant will be as you don’t want to be constantly repotting. If you use large garden pots, then interesting displays can be made by planting several plants together, for example, an upright plant and one that cascades down the side of the container.

Variety

One of the advantages of using garden pots is that you can have a ‘mobile garden’. When you don’t like the look that you have created or want to feature a special plant then you can rearrange them. In addition to this you can take the plants with you if you move. If you wish to do this you should obviously choose light weight ones rather than heavy clay or concrete.

There are containers suitable for indoor and outdoor gardening and almost any plant, flower or vegetable can be grown in garden pots.
